Railway's April-January revenue rises 7.77 per cent to Rs76,187 crore

Indian Railways has reported a 7.77 per cent increase in its revenue earnings, on originating basis, during the first 10 months of the current financial year (April 2010 to January 2011) at Rs76,187.27 crore compared with Rs70,696.03 crore during the corresponding period of the previous financial year.

Total earnings from freight traffic have gone up by 6.57 per cent to Rs50,899.20 crore during April 2010-January 2011 from Rs47,761.20 crore during April 2009-January 2010.

Total revenue from passenger services during the first ten months of the 2010-11 financial year increased 10.05 per cent to Rs21,336.94 crore from Rs19,387.76 crore during the same period last fiscal. Revenue from other coaching increased 10.25 per cent to Rs2,093.96 crore during April 2010-January 2011 against Rs1,899.30 crore during the comparable period last financial year.

Total approximate number of passengers booked during April 2010-January 2011 was 6,572.44 million against 6,184.23 million during the same period last financial year, showing an increase of 6.28 per cent.

In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the number of passengers booked during April 2010-January 2011 was 3,392.33 million and 3,180.11 million, respectively, compared to 3,208.53 million and 2,975.70 million during the same period last financial year, showing an increase of 5.73 per cent and 6.87 per cent, respectively.

The Railways carried 755.97 million tonnes of revenue earning freight during April 2010-January 2011 - an increase of 25.01 million tonnes (or 3.42 per cent) over the freight traffic of 730.96 million tonnes during the corresponding period last year.

Railways' freight traffic increased by 4.22 million tonnes (or 5.39 per cent) year-on-year to 82.55 million tonnes against the actual freight traffic of 78.33 million tonnes carried during the same period last year
