Railways' freight revenue up 9.32 per cent at Rs47,239 crore in April-January FY'10

Indian Railway has reported Rs47,238.72 crore of revenue-earning freight traffic between April 2009 and January 2010, against Rs43,212.72 crore during the corresponding period of the previous year - an increase of 9.32 per cent.

It carried 730.96 million tonnes of commodity freight during April-January 2009-10 compared with 681.28 million tonnes carried during the corresponding period last year - an increase of 7.29 per cent.

The net tonne kilometre went up from 439,511 million during April-January 2008-09 to 480,739 million during April-January 2009-10, showing an increase of 9.39 per cent.

Out of the total earnings of Rs5,091.89 crore from commodity-wise freight traffic during January 2010, Rs2,047.73 crore came from transportation of 36.23 million tonnes of coal, followed by Rs719.09 crore from 11.40 million tonnes of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic user, Rs484.72 crore from 8.46 million tonnes of cement, Rs361.27 crore from 3.46 million tonnes of foodgrains, Rs282.69 crore from 3.31 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL), Rs293.39 crore from 2.70 million tonnes of pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points, Rs259.53 crore from 3.42 million tonnes of fertilisers, Rs67.19 crore from 0.83 million tonnes of raw material for steel plants except iron ore, Rs232.23 crore from 2.89 million tonnes by container traffic and Rs344.05 crore from 5.63 million tonnes of other goods.
