Railways' revenue up 8.76 per cent at Rs62,976 crore in April-December 2009

The total estimated earnings of the Railways' from traffic - both passenger and goods - on an originating basis, during the April-December 2009 period stood at Rs62,975.58 crore compared with Rs57,901.88 crore in the same period of the previous year - an increase of 8.76 per cent over the nine-month period of the current financial year.

The total goods earnings have gone up from Rs39,087.98 crore during April-December to Rs42,488.97 crore during April-December 2009 - an increase of 8.70 per cent.

Total passenger revenue earnings during the first nine months of the financial year 2009-10 were Rs17,497.18 crore, compared with Rs16,242.45 crore during the same period of the previous year, registering an increase of 7.73 per cent.

Revenue earnings from other coaching amounted to Rs1,703.45 crore during April-December 2009, compared with Rs1,475.33 crore during the same period last year - an increase of 15.46 per cent.

Total approximate number of passengers booked during April-December 2009 was 5,569.15 million compared with 5,320.04 million during the same period last year - an increase of 4.68 per cent.

In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the numbers of passengers booked during April-December 2009 were 2,874.20 million and 2,694.95 million, respectively, compared with 2,837.21 million and 2,482.83 million during the same period last year - an increase of 1.30 per cent and 8.54 per cent, respectively.
