The Indian Railways plans to develop model (adarsh) stations during 2009-10 equipped with basic facilities such as drinking water, adequate toilets, catering services, waiting rooms etc. The ministry has identified 375 stations all over the country for this scheme announced by railway minster Mamata Banerjee in her Railway Budget 2009-10.

"This year we are taking up 375 stations for inclusion as adarsh stations," Ms Banerjee said.

The model stations would also provide dormitories especially for lady passengers, and will be equipped with better signs as well.

Apart from model stations, the ministry also plans to develop 50 selected stations as world-class stations.

''We have decided to develop about 50 stations as world class stations with international level facilities. These will be developed, through innovative financing and in public private partnership mode,'' Banerjee said.

Some of these stations are: CST Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Howrah, Sealdah, Bhubaneswar, New Delhi, Lucknow, Varanasi, Amritsar, Kanpur, Guwahati, Jaipur and Chennai Central.
