Vodafone cuts costs of internet access on smartphones in Europe

Vodafone has reduced the cost of using the internet on smartphones in Europe, a step that is expected to avert a "bill shock".

Vodafone said it would introduce cheaper data roaming tariffs for British customers who wanted to use email or watch videos on their handsets while overseas.

The European Commission this summer introduced rules to prevent phone users getting charged huge sums after a German traveller was presented a €46,000 bill for downloading a film to his phone.

Neelie Kroes, the EC's digital agenda commissioner said there would no more be bill shocks for tourists or business travellers surfing the internet.

According to some analysts, Vodafone had taken a step towards cutting data charges but added that telco was in a way making a virtue of necessity with regulatory pressures driving down charges.

The third biggest mobile operator in the UK will from tomorrow allow customers to browse the web on their mobiles while in Europe for £2 a day.
