Telecommunications service provider Tata Teleservices on Tuesday announced the introduction of a digital system for bill payments. The company has launched a pre-paid top-up and post-paid bill payment service through SMS.

The firm has partnered with mChek, a Mumbai-based mobile payment service provider, for this purpose. To use the service, subscribers have to send an SMS from their Tata Indicom mobile phone. They will then receive an automated call back on the phone to register their credit card number and approval for the transaction, the statement added.

Bill payments can be done by using a credit card issued by any bank in India. On completion of the transaction, users get an SMS receipt which shows that the transaction was completed successfully.

First time users will have to register their MasterCard or Visa by entering their card number, expiry date and CVV. Tata Indicom subscribers can also register on the mCheck website.

The pricing and availability details are yet to be announced.

The country's biggest phone service provider, Airtel, has already signed up with mCheck and has been offering similar services since 2007.
