Onida launches smart TVs; plans expansion into appliances and LED lights

MIRC Electronics, which manufactures the Onida range of TVs, today unveiled a new range of smart TVs. The smart TV range under the brand `iTube' are priced at least 10 per cent below those of Samsung and LG, which currently sells smart TVs at the lowest prices.

Onida is also expanding its presence in the home appliances business like microwave ovens and washing machines, and is also working on developing LED lights.

"We are working on LED lights, microwave oven and washing machines..The markets for these products are growing in India," Sanjeev K Jain, vice president (sales and service) of MIRC Electronics Ltd, said.

Mumbai-based MIRC Electronics, which offers colour television sets, LCDs and DVD, has also entered the mobile phone, airconditioners and flat panel devices businesses.

Jain said the company was looking at increasing its exports by foraying into more countries by 2012-13.

"We want to increase our exports. We have covered the Gulf…We are looking at markets like Kenya, Nigeria. Hopefully by 2012-13, we look for huge exports," he said.
