The Ratan Jindal-led JSL Limited and the Orissa government have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for putting up a 1320MW capacity super critical thermal power plant, at an estimated  cost of Rs7,375 crore.

The plant, to be located at Luni in Dhenkanal district, would draw water from river Mahanadi, according to energy secretary Pradip Kumar Jena who signed the document on behalf of the state government.

Already, 26 independent power producers (IPPs), excluding JSL, have started working on projects to generate 31,100 MW of thermal power in the state, Jena said.

Chief minister Naveen Patnaik asked thermal power plants to use clean coal technology for reduction of carbon dioxide emission as also improve boiler efficiency through use of appropriate technology.

He also wanted the power producers to adopt an effective fly ash management plan.

The JSL power plant would create employment both direct and indirect for 2,600 people, he said.

The company has asked for 2,000 acres of land for the project, which the government has agreed to, according to Rajdeep Mohanty, JSL Limited's resident director for Orissa.
