New international airport at Devanahalli to be known as Bengaluru International Airport

Bangalore: Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), the promoters of the new international airport coming up at Devanahalli, have named the airport as the 'Bengaluru International Airport.' They have also finalised a new logo for the airport, which, through its floral motif, reflects the city's title as the country's Garden City.

The new airport, which is rapidly nearing completion and is already testing its systems, is set to flag off the first flight from its premises in about 60 days.

''We have adopted the city's proposed name of Bengaluru, and the airport will be called Bengaluru International Airport,'' said BIAL officials.

A new name for the airport has brought forth varied responses, and protests, from all quarters. The list of names has encompassed the names of prominent personalities such as the founder of Bangalore, Kempe Gowda, the former Diwan of Mysore State, Sir M Visvesvaraya, even Kannada matinee idol, Rajkumar, and perhaps with more justification, one of the country's first freedom fighters, Tipu Sultan, who was born in Devanahalli.
