Qatar Airways is looking at acquiring up to 49 per cent of IndiGo, the subcontinent's largest carrier by market share, as part of its expansion plans, although the Indian airliner has no immediate plans to sell a stake.

Speaking to newspersons, Akbar Al Baker, chief executive of the Doha-based airline, said the airline's India operations is looking to buy a stake in the Indian carrier to expand operations.

"We're not in talks, we have a personal relationship between us and the owner of IndiGo," Al Baker told a news conference in Dubai.

"He has indicated they are not planning to sell a stake in IndiGo, but once they consider he knows I'm interested."
