IndiGo pushes Air India to fourth slot in January

New Delhi:  Budget carrier IndiGo airlines carried 1.71 lakh more domestic passengers than flag carrier Air India in January this year and in the process displaced the national carrier from the third slot amongst the top three carriers in the country by number of passengers ferried.

IndiGo also recorded the highest occupancy level last month at 88.6 per cent.

Though domestic traffic marginally dipped by 5 per cent compared to December last year, according to figures released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for the month of January, the numbers were 21 per cent higher than those recorded in January 2010.

Over 49.36 lakh passengers were carried by all domestic airlines last month against 40.88 lakh in January 2010.

With a total of 12.26 lakh passengers, Jet Airways and its subsidiary JetLite together carried around one-fourth of the total passengers last month. They were followed by Kingfisher, which carried 9.61 lakh and IndiGo with 9.5 lakh.

Air India (Domestic) carried 7.79 lakh passengers and SpiceJet 7.05 lakh. GoAir ferried 3.15 lakh.
