New Delhi: The board of state-owned Air India (AI) may have capped the salary level of its chief operating officers at Rs1 crore. This is a substantial reduction from levels offered to earlier incumbent, the expatriate, Gustav Baldauf and two others.

Baldauf and the others exited from the airline after a short stay and great acrimony.

Earlier this month the board approved appointments of COOs for Air India and its sister airline, the international low fare operator, Air India Express.

Perennially short of cash to pay staff salaries, the airline had approved handsome remunerations for Gustav Baldauf and others, who were appointed as COOs for AI Express and chief of training, causing much heartburn amongst the staff.

Industry observers are hoping that this time round the carrier will opt for professionals who will understand the needs of the organisation and act accordingly.
