Air caterers, TajSATS, firm up expansion plans in India

Mumbai: Leading Indian air catering service company, TajSATS, will be pumping in close to Rs400 crore in setting up 15 kitchens around the country in five years. The caterer is a joint venture between Indian Hotels Company and Singapore Airport Terminal Services.

According to company officials, the expansion plans were firmed up following the recent spurt in the air catering business, which grew 20 per cent last year on the back of a 30 per cent growth in passenger traffic.

The company said it has recently set up kitchens in Goa, Bangalore and Amritsar. According to industry experts, it may now be surveying opportunities at tier II cities such as Nagpur, Guwahati, Cochin, Amritsar, Calicut and Pune. The airports at these non-metros are due to be upgraded.

According to industry figures, TajSATS generates revenues of around Rs300 crore, which is almost half of the overall industry figures.

Other players in this space include Oberoi, Ambassador and Skygourmet.
