New Delhi: Faced with a pressing problem of serving the country's northeastern region in larger volumes, India Post now proposes to wet-lease a freighter aircraft from Indian. Lease and maintenance costs are expected to cost the department at least Rs48 crore.

"The department of Post has proposed to wet-lease a freighter aircraft from the Indian Airlines for the conveyance of mail to the northeast region. In addition to an initial one-time expenditure of Rs12 crores, approximately Rs 36 crores would be incurred on this account per year," minister of state of communications and information technology Shakeel Ahmad informed the Lok Sabha.

The deployment of the aircraft is expected to generate additional revenue in terms of increased mail volumes, he added.
