Anglo American, University of Birmingham to jointly perfect carbon recycling technology for steel mills
24 Jan 2025

Mining and metals giant Anglo American has announced a partnership with the University of Birmingham and industry-promoter Cambridge Future Tech to launch PeroCycle, a new venture aimed at developing and commercialising carbon recycling technology for use in steel making.
PeroCycle will leverage on innovative carbon recycling method pioneered by Professor Yulong Ding and Harriet Kildahl at the University of Birmingham’s School of Chemical Engineering.
The duo developed an in-process carbon recycling method with the use of a double perovskite material, which enabled the in-process splitting of carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide at very low temperatures compared to current methods. The carbon monoxide is then recycled in a closed loop, using it as a substitute for coal or coke which is used in steel making, thereby lowering carbon dioxide emissions.
Cambridge Future Tech will help in the spin-out and development of PeroCycle, which could lead to commercialising the technology.
Anglo American is a leading global mining company engaged in the production of copper, iron ore and crop nutrients.
The mining giant is currently undertaking major structural changes to unlock its true potential and pursue its strategic priorities, thereby simplifying growth.
