The pension market in India is virtually untapped compared to other developed markets of the world. In USA, pension accounts for about 49 per cent of the insurance policies sold each year for life insurance while in India less than 1 per cent of the market has been covered with pension items. Pension funds in India are twice the size of mutual funds and if allowed the freedom to be productively invested and transacted they can make a significant contribution to the development of Indian capital markets.

As India launches its pension fund reforms, busy drawing up a legal framework for setting up an Indian Pension Authority, it is time to draw on the experience of other countries like Singapore and USA, which provide India with ample lessons. The challenges lie in evolving a foolproof system, which is cost effective, capable of reaching out to millions and is also financially attractive. There are immense opportunities in converting these long term savings into productive investments.

To throw more light on these issues CII or Confederation of Indian Industry is organizing an interactive seminar on 20 July 2001 at Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai. To begin at 10 AM the speakers include Mr R Ravimohan, Mr SA Dave, Mr Mukul G Asher, Mr Manish Sabharwal, Mr Baman K Mehta, Mr Sanjay Sachdev and Ms Reeta Kaul.
