No Deming awards for India this time
20 Oct 2006
Chennai: This is the time of the year when the names of companies that qualify for the prestigious Deming prize are announced. But this time there are no Indian winners. The Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE) has awarded the Deming Application Prize to only three companies — Nishizawa Electric Meters Manufacturing Co., Limited, Japan, Sanden International (Singapore) PTE Limited, Singapore and Sanden International (USA.), Inc, USA.
After the Chennai-based Sundaram Clayton Limited won the Deming medal in 1999, Indian companies — mainly South India-based auto component manufacturers — started figuring in the winners list regularly. And from 2001 to 2005 Indian companies continuously figured in the prize list.
Last year two Rane Group companies and Krishna Maruti, New Delhi, won the Deming application prize.
It was a rich haul in 2003 when four out of the seven winners were Indian corporates. The next year saw three Indian companies out of the six winners bagging the award.
In terms of industrial groups, the major winners are TVS and Rane. Five companies from the TVS group and three belonging to Rane group have won the Deming medal.
