A thimble-like device sitting at the end of one's finger, which allows users to interact with the virtual world in three dimensions might spell the end of the computer mouse.

The human computer interaction had been dominated by the mouse since its invention in the 1960s by Doug Engelbert. However, the use the device, limited the movements of users to two-dimensions, MIT Technology Review reporeted.

Anh Nguyen and Amy Banic from the University of Wyoming in the US had created an intelligent thimble capable of sensing its position accurately in three-dimensions and responding to a set of preprogrammed gestures that allowed the user to interact with objects in a virtual three-dimensional world.

The report said Nguyen and Banic aimed to create a cheap device that worked as a universal input for more or less any computing device, which they wanted make as small and unobtrusive as possible so that it could be easily transported.
