China has moved up 13 positions to 37th in global information technology (IT) industry competitiveness rankings, relegating India to the 44th position.
India, however, has moved up four notches from its 48th position last year to 44th in the Economist Intelligence Unit's IT Industry Competitiveness Index 2009, with a score of 34.1.
China, on the other hand, moved up 13 positions from 50th last year to 37th in this year's ranking, with a score of 36.7 points.
Within Asia-Pacific, Australia, Singapore and Japan were the top three while India ranked among the top 10 countries.
Although India continued to do well in enabling an open, transparent business environment and development of sound IT infrastructure, it still need to improve its R&D environment, the report said.
India has also shown improvement in its R&D environment, a strong performance in the business environment and encouraging improvements in the legal environment.
"Challenges for China and India remain balancing large pools of skilled IT personnel with progress in IT infrastructure," says the report.
The study, now in its third year, compares the information technology industry environments of 66 economies, to determine the extent to which they enable IT sector competitiveness.
