Passenger vehicle sales up 0.28% in October: SIAM

Total passenger vehicle sales in India increased by 0.28 per cent to 2,85,027  units in October 2019, data released by industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on Monday showed. Carmakers had sold a total of 2,84,223 passenger vehicles in the corresponding period a year ago, the industry body said in its report. 

The marginal increase in passenger vehicles sales fuelled hopes of a recovery in the auto sector, which is struggling against low demand and thousands of job cuts.
However, production of passenger vehicles dropped 21.14 per cent to 2,69,186 units last month, while exports declined 2.18 per cent, SIAM data showed. 
Out of the total passenger vehicle sales of 2,85,027 units during the month, 1,73,549 were passenger cars, marking a decline of 6.34 per cent. 
Production of passenger cars came in at 1,62,343 vehicles, marking a drop of 30.22 per cent compared with the year-ago period. 
Passenger cars form the majority of passenger vehicles, which also include utility vehicles and vans. 
Total domestic sales - including passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, two wheelers and three wheelers - however declined 12.76 per cent on a year-on-year basis. 
Total production plunged 26.22 per cent, while exports registered a rise of 2.72 per cent, the data showed.
Sales of commercial vehicles - including light, medium and heavy carriers of passengers and goods - fell 23.31 per cent. 
A total of 66,773 commercial vehicles were sold during the month, which included 51,439 light commercial vehicles. 
A total 17,57,264 two wheelers were sold in October, down 14.43 per cent from the year-ago period.
Two wheeler exports increased 8.03 per cent however production declined 26.57 per cent.
The industry produced a total 16,583,587 vehicles, including passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, three wheelers, two wheelers and quadricycles in April-October 2019 against 19,567,358 in April-October 2018, registering a de-growth (-) 15.25 per cent over the same period last year.
Sale of passenger vehicles declined by  20.22 per cent in April-October 2019 over the same period last year. Within the passenger vehicles segment, sales for passenger cars and vans declined by 27.02 percent and 35.41 percent, respectively, in April-October 2019 over the same period last year, while the sale of utility vehicle increased by 0.14 per cent.
Overall commercial vehicle sales registered a decline of 23.00 per cent in April-October 2019 compared to the same period last year. Medium and heavy commercial vehicles (M&HCVs) sales declined by 37.78 per cent and that of light commercial vehicles declined by 13.73 per cent in April-October 2019 over the same period last year.
Three wheelers sales declined by 6.15 per cent in April-October 2019 over the same period last year. Within the three wheeler segment, passenger carrier sales registered a de-growth of 5.98 per cent and goods carrier sales declined by 6.99 per cent in April-October 2019 over April-October 2018.
Two wheeler sales registered a de-growth of 15.92 per cent in April-October 2019 over April-October 2018. Within the two wheeler segment, sales of scooters, motorcycles and mopeds declined by 15.90 per cent, 15.34 per cent and 25.58 per cent, respectively, in April-October 2019 over April-October 2018.
Overall automobile exports in April-October 2019 grew 1.49 per cent with passenger vehicles and two wheelers exports growing at 3.54 per cent and 4.64 per cent, respectively. However sales of commercial vehicles and three wheelers registered de-growth of  41.46 per cent and 11.91 per cent, respectively, in April-October 2019 over the same period last year.
