Many UK families are looking at an uncertain future with one in five admitting they are just managing to make ends meet.

Results of a research that show 20 per cent of families are struggling to cope financially while another two-fifths are ''just getting by'' have come as a shock.

The survey by think tank Centre for the Modern Family shows people were being battered by increased living costs and falling wages.

They are also groaning under the escalating cost of childcare and the continuing harsh economic climate, and many are getting hit by the Coalition's cutbacks.

Financial woes have hit Welsh families the hardest with 57 per cent saying it was their biggest challenge as against a national average of 45 per cent.

Young families, meanwhile are being forced to resort to desperate measures with 18 to 32 year olds with children twice as likely to have turned to payday loans and 50 per cent or more resorting to selling their possessions online than average.
