Coup bid in Bangladesh foiled, claims army

The Bangladesh Army today said it had effectively foiled a bid by some "religiously fanatic" Islamist officers to overthrow the elected government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The Army said it is now in the process of bringing the culprits to justice.
The plot had been fomented by Bangladeshi expatriates who were in contact with "religiously fanatic army officers," Army spokesman Brigadier General Masud Razzaq said in a statement.
The plot involved up to 16 Islamist officers, both active and retired, local media quoted the General as saying.
"We have unearthed a heinous conspiracy to overthrow the democratic government through the Army," the military communiqué said.
"The attempt has been thwarted with the whole-hearted efforts of army soldiers," it added.
