India’s wholesale price inflation at (-)0.59% in July

India’s wholesale price inflation, based on the all-India Wholesale Price Index (WPI) continued to remain in the negative territory for a second month, hitting a 2-year low of (-) 0.58 per cent in July 2025 on the back of a decline in the prices of food items, mineral oils, crude petroleum, natural gas and basic metals.
Inflation rate for the primary articles group, which has a weight of 22.62 per cent in the Wholesale Price Index, increased by 1.18 per cent in July 2025, due mainly to increase in the price of crude petroleum and natural gas, non-food articles and food articles. However, the price of minerals decreased.
Inflation rate for the `fuel and power group (weight of 13.15 per cent in WPI) increased by 1.12 per cent in July 2025. The price of mineral oils increased in July 2025 while prices of coal and electricity decreased during the month.
Inflation rate for the manufactured products group (weight of 64.23 per cent in WPI) declined by 0.14 per cent in July 2025.
Within the manufactured products group, nine out of the 22 groups recorded a decline in prices while 4 groups witnessed no change in prices. Some of the important groups that showed increase in prices includrd manufacturing, transport equipment, motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers, other non-metallic mineral products and furniture etc.
Some of the groups that showed a decline in prices in July 2025 included basic metals, fabricated metal products, food products, chemicals and chemical products and paper and paper products etc.
Food price inflation, based on the WPI Food Index (weight of 24.38 per cent in WPI) comprising 'food articles' from primary articles group and 'food products' from the manufactured products group remained negative at (-)2.15 per cent in July 2025 against (-) 0.26 per cent in June.
WPI inflation rate for May 3036, based on the final index (Base Year: 2011-12=100) for 'All Commodities' stood at 0.13 per cent as per the revised estimates.
