India-Malaysia clear direct flights on Penang-Chennai route
22 Apr 2008
The governments of India and Malaysia have agreed to allow direct flights between Penang and Chennai. Speaking to members of the Penang Indian Chamber of Commerce, Indian High Commissioner, Ashok P Kanta, asked Malaysian airline companies to make use of the opportunity.
Malaysian Namban quoted Kanta as saying that the introduction of direct flights would help increase the number of tourists between both countries and also improve bilateral relations.
Kanta also said that Penang businessmen should make use of the investment opportunities that were available in the trade, education, telecommunications and health sectors in India. He also asked Malaysian Indians to take the opportunity to apply for the Indian government's financial aid provided to students who wish to pursue professional studies.
Kanta said so far about 30 students had submitted their applications.
