Vitamin D deficiency could increase brain stroke risk: study

Vitamin D deficiency could up the risk of brain strokes, according to researchers in India.

Doctors from Yashoda Hospitals and Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad, monitored 250 brain stroke patients, over a two year period, The Hindu reported.

According to the researchers, of the 250 brain stroke patients, who participated in the research conducted over a period of two years, 122 had Vitamin D deficiency.

They said, the association of Vitamin D to strokes once again proved the need for greater advocacy among the general public about the need to frequently check for its levels.

Dr Jaydip Ray Choudhari, senior neurologist who led the study, told the newspaper that lack of Vitamin D was being increasingly associated with a host of ailments including cardiovascular diseases.

He added, their study proved that in addition to other ailments, Vitamin D was also associated with strokes.

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that helps keep bone and teeth healthy. It also plays a major role in the regulation of calcium and phosphate in the body.
