Washington: US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner arrives in India on a two-day visit next month to launch a new initiative aimed at enhancing economic and financial ties between the two countries.

Geithner begins his trip on 6 April in New Delhi when he meets Indian finance minister Pranab Mukherjee.

This will be a first meeting of the US-India Economic and Financial Partnership, an initiative aimed at strengthening "bilateral engagement and understanding on macroeconomic, financial sector and infrastructure related issues."

In a statement the US Department of Treasury said Geithner then leaves for Mumbai where he meets Indian and US and business leaders on 7 April, before returning to Washington.

The White House announced the partnership last November after a meeting between US president Barack Obama and Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh.
