India today sent two Naval ships with relief material to the cyclone-hit Sri Lanka, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured the island nation of all help in dealing with the devastation caused by cyclone 'Roanu'.

INS Sutlej, a survey vessel, sailed for Colombo from Southern Naval Command in Kochi, while INS Sunayna, a Naval offshore patrol vessel, will be leaving soon with more relief material, Navy officials said.

Over 40 people were killed and more than 400,000 people affected due to the heavy rains and landslides in various parts of the island nation in the last few days.

Cyclone Roanu has also put coastal states in India on high alert.

Prime Minister Modi had condoled the deaths on Thursday and Tweeted that India stands "resolutely to help the government and people of Sri Lanka. Assistance (is) being rushed on emergency basis".

Cyclone Roanu hit Sri Lankan coast three days back causing massive flooding and mudslides leaving scores dead and displacing over a hundred thousand people.
