Wholesale price inflation down at 6.55 per cent in January

The annual rate of inflation based on wholesale price index (WPI) stood at 6.55 per cent in January 2012, against 7.47 per cent in the previous month and 9.47 per cent during the corresponding month of the previous year.

While food inflation has turned negative with the latest data showing it at (-) 0.52 per cent against 16.88 per cent in January 2010, manufacturing inflation in January 2012 stood higher at 6.49 per cent compared to last year's level of 5.32 per cent.

Build-up inflation so far during the financial year was 5.48 per cent, compared with a build up of 8.58 per cent in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The official wholesale price index for 'all commodities' (base: 2004-05 = 100) rose 0.5 per cent to 157.7 (provisional) in January 2012 from 156.9 (provisional) in the previous month.

The index for the `primary articles' group rose 0.9 per cent to 199.7 (provisional) in January 2012 from 197.9 (provisional) in the previous month.

Among primary articles, the index for the 'food articles' group rose 0.3 per cent to 191.4 (provisional) during the month from 190.8 (provisional) in the previous month.
