Consumer price inflation in the country, based on the consumer price index, declined to 4.29 per cent in April 2021, after hitting a high of 5.52 per cent in March, on the back of an easing of food prices. Consumer price inflation in the country, however, has remained within the tolerance limit of 4+/- 2 per cent set by the Reserve Bank of India.

The fall in inflation rate in April may be attributed to an easing of food prices and a respite in the steady rise in oil prices. The skyrocketing of edible oil prices in the country, however, belie the claims of any decline in food prices.
Data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) showed that consumer price inflation that hit a high of 5.52 per cent in March has shown a downward trend.
Consumer price inflation for rural areas stood at 3.82 per cent in April 2021, down from4.61 per cent in March.
Consumer price inflation for urban areas declined to 4.77 per cent in April 2021 against 6.52 in March.
Food price inflation rate more than halved to 2.02 per cent in April 2021 after zooming to 4.94 per cent in March.
Food price inflation for rural areas stood at 1.45 per cent in April 2021, falling from levels around 3.94 per cent in March.
Food price inflation for urban areas stood lower at 3.15 per cent in April 2021 against 4.94 per cent March.
