India grants record 98,881 patents in three years

The Indian Patent Office granted a record  98,881 patents during the past three years, ie, 2006-07, 2007-08  and 2008-09. A record 103,035 patent application were filed over the past three years.

The office received 36,877 patent applications in 2009-09 against 35,218 in 2007-08 and 28,940 in 2006-07, Jyotiraditya M Scindia, minister of state for commerce and  industry, informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply.

The government has approved implementation of the scheme for `Modernisation and Strengthening of Intellectual Property Offices' during the 11th Plan (2007-08 to 2011-12). The scheme provides for creation of more posts of examiners of patents and designs and for modernisation of the infrastructure of the Patent Office, he said.

The scheme inter-alia, provides for development of physical infrastructure, recruitment of human resources, computerisation and creation of awareness, the minister added.
