In a press statement released on Wednesday, 20 December 2023, Toyota Motors declared its decision to recall 1.12 million vehicles globally, citing potential issues with airbag deployment linked to a short circuit in a sensor.

The recall, spanning model years 2020 through 2022, encompasses a range of vehicles, including popular models such as the Avalon, Camry, Corolla, and RAV4, as well as Lexus ES250, ES300H, ES350, RX350, Highlander, and Sienna Hybrid vehicles. The primary concern revolves around the Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensors, which may malfunction, potentially leading to airbags not deploying as intended.

Notably, the recall affects approximately 1 million vehicles in the United States alone. The OCS sensors play a crucial role in ensuring that airbags refrain from being deployed if a small adult or child occupies the front seat. As part of the recall process, authorized dealers will inspect the sensors and, if necessary, replace them.

Owners of the affected vehicles can expect notifications about the recall starting in February 2024, according to the automakers’s plans.

This isn’t the first time Toyota has addressed concerns related to the OCS sensors. In July 2022, the company recalled 3,500 RAV4 vehicles in the United States due to potential interference between internal components, leading to inaccurate occupant detection by the OCS sensor.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration emphasizes the critical role of frontal airbags, attributing them to saving over 50,000 lives in the United States over the past 30 years. The latest recall is a precautionary measure stemming from the evolution of airbag technology. Older airbags deployed uniformly for all occupants, causing injuries and, in rare cases, fatalities, especially among children, small adults, and unbelted passengers in close proximity to the airbag during deployment, as noted by the agency.

As safety remains a top priority, Toyota’s proactive approach to addressing potential issues underscores the automotive industry’s commitment to ensuring the well-being of vehicle occupants. The upcoming inspections and replacements aim to uphold the highest safety standards in the affected vehicles, contributing to a safer driving experience for consumers worldwide.
