Aditya Birla Group firm Hindalco Industries has acquired US-based specialty alumina company AluChem Companies Inc for $125 million, expanding its downstream portfolio in specility products and raising annual alumina production capacity in North America by 60,000 tonnes.

Hindalco proposes to make the acquisition through Aditya Holdings LLC, a stepdown wholly owned subsidiary of Hindalco.

With three manufacturing facilities in Ohio and Arkansas, AluChem supplies ultra-low soda calcined alumina and tabular alumina for the manufacture of high-precision mechanical components and energy-intensive industrial refractories.

The acquisition of AluChem with its portfolio of speciality alumina products will expand Hindalco’s presence in North America and globally.

AluChem is an well established manufacturer and supplier of speciality alumina products that are known for exceptional thermal and mechanical properties.

Kumar Mangalam Birla, chairman of the Aditya Birla Group said his company is looking at global leadership in value-added and high-tech materials to pursue high-impact growth.

Specialty alumina finds applications in high-tech sectors such as electric mobility, semiconductors, and precision ceramics. The global market for specialty alumina products is projected to grow with increasing demand for newer applications.

This is Hindalco’s third acquisition of a metals company in the US, after its 2007 acquisition of Novelis Inc and the 2020 acquisition of Aleris Corp.

Meanwhile, Hindalco, which currently operates 500,000 tonnes of speciality alumina capacity in India, is planning to double this to 1 million tonnes by FY30. The company posted a 66 per cent year-on-year increase in its net profit for the January-March 2025 quarterm at Rs5,283 crore.

Hindalco Industries, a $28 billion metals giant, is currently the world’s largest aluminium company by revenue and a major producer of copper. It has operations in 10 countries and 52 manufacturing locations.
