Mumbai police commisioner summons telecom operators for benami connections

an expose on how benami (anonymous) phone connections
were issued on his own name, Mumbai police commissioner
A N Roy summoned telecom operators to his office today,
reports CNBC-TV18.
Commissioner Roy is not happy; after Uncovered procured four mobile phone connections on his name from his residence address, the commissioner cracked the whip on telecom operators.
Top officials had a meeting with the police top brass at the police headquarters today and were told in no uncertain terms, verification must be stepped up.
"Definitely we are going to take this issue very seriously because this is a violation of licensing condition. We will take it to a logical end and hope such things don't happen in the future," said Dhanajay Kamlakar, DCP Crime, Mumbai Police.
The
telecom industry has been earlier told to verify all subscribers
for their bonafide but it is split on the extent to which
connections should
be verified. A section of the industry also insists it
is the police's job to verify and not the industry's.
But Mumbai police at least is now, in no mood to listen.
