Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Russian space agency, Roscosmos, in order to develop the country''s aerospace industry.

According to science, technology and innovations minister Datuk Seri Dr Jamaludin Jarjis, Russian space agency Roscosmos proposed to sign a MoU with the Malaysian Space Agency, which would develop the country''s aerospace industry, and this proposal was accepted.

He said the MoU also covered an agreement to train another Malaysian cosmonaut, Mejar Dr Faiz Khaleed, for a flight into space sometime in 2010-11.

"My ministry is currently finalising the MoU and once the discussion with Roscosmos has been finalised, we''ll take it to the Cabinet probably by early next year," he told a press conference at the defence ministry here today.

Jamaludin also said that Russia had invited Malaysia to participate in its Global Orbiting Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) as well. GLONASS is the Russian counterpart of the US Global Positioning System (GPS).

He said that Russia had also offered to launch Malaysia''s communications satellite into space, as well as assistance with Razaksat, Malaysia''s remote sensing satellite.
