A training course was launched today for the benefit of a group of 10 inmates of Cherlapally jail in Hyderabad, who have been selected to work in a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) unit that will be set up within the jail premises soon.

According to officers of the prisons department, the group that includes engineers and other professionals with computer skills will be trained by Radiant Technologies and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) employees.

TCS has provided 10 computers for training. At a later date the 10 prisoners will train another 100 prisoners in BPO operations.

CN Gopinath Reddy, director general (prisons), told The Indian Express that hopefully the Cherlapally prison would be the first-of-its-kind BPO in a couple of months. He added that it would be operated on Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with TCS providing hardware equipment and Radiant Technologies helping with training and other services.

He added that the BPO would be open only for convicts and not undertrial prisoners.

The BPO will take up projects in areas of data processing and data entry. Each prisoner associated with the BPO will get a salary in addition to general allowance, paid by the government.
