India's mineral production up over 14 per cent in March 2010

Production of minerals from mining and quarrying sector in the country rose 14.41 per cent in March 2010 from that of the preceding month.

Mineral production in March 2010 was higher by 10.96 per cent compared with that of the corresponding month of previous year, an official release said today.

The mineral sector also showed a positive growth of 9.75 per cent during the financial year ended 31 March 2010 (April-March 2009-10), compared to that of the previous year.

The total value of mineral production (excluding atomic and minor minerals) in the country during March 2010 was Rs11,316 crore.

The contribution of coal was the highest at Rs4,761 crore (42 per cent). Next in the order of importance were: iron ore Rs2,261 crore, petroleum (crude) Rs1,648 crore, natural gas (utilised) Rs1,474 crore, lignite Rs273 crore and limestone Rs266 crore.

These six minerals together contributed about 94 per cent of the total value of mineral production in March 2010.
