Mumbai: State Bank of India (SBI), the country's largest bank, and NCR Corporation, the world's leading provider of financial self-service solutions, have signed an agreement to deploy about 1,500 automated teller machines (ATMs) in the next 18 months. With this deployment, SBI will have the largest network of over 3,000 ATMs spanning the lengths and breadth of India.

The contract, signed in Mumbai on 19 April 2003, encompasses hardware, site installation services and ATM network management services. Says SBI chief general manager (IT) C Narasimhan: "SBI is in the forefront of the technological revolution that is sweeping the banking and finance sector in India. For us and our customers, the differentiator will be technology and our ability to serve our customers in a manner most convenient to them."

Says NCR Corporation India managing director Deepak Chandnani: "This is the largest contract that NCR India has signed. We remain committed to fully support SBI's retail and technical initiative. We are with them at every step of the way, be it installing an ATM, providing a host of related services or remotely managing the entire network from our ATM management centre."

SBI has introduced a host of functions including payment of fees, touch-screen ATM locator, multilingual screens and cash withdrawal for SBI credit cardholders. Several other initiatives are under way. These new functionalities will enhance the entire self-service experience adding to customers' convenience.
