India’s consumer price inflation down at 4.31% in January

India’s consumer price inflation hit a 5-month low of 4.31 per cent in January 2025, down from 5.22 per cent in December 2024 and 5.10 per cent in January 2024, on the back of a steep fall in vegetable prices on increased seasonal supplies, provisional data released by the National Statistics Office (NSO) showed.
Inflation based on the All-India Consumer Price Index (CPI) had reached a 14-month high of 6.21 per cent in October.
CPI inflation rate for rural areas stood at 4.64 per cent in January 2025 against 5.76 per cent in December and 5.34 per cent in January last year.
CPI inflation for urban areas stood at 3.87 per cent in October 2024 against 4.58 per cent in December 2024 and 4.92 per cent in January 2024.
Inflation rate based on the All India Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) stood at 6.02 per cent in January 2025 against 8.39 per cent in December and 8.30 in January 2024.
Food price inflation for rural areas stood at 6.31 per cent in January 2025, against 8.65 per cent in December 2024 and 7.91 per cent in January 2024.
Food price inflation for urban areas stood at 5.53 per cent in January 2025 against 7.9 per cent in December 2024 and 9.02 per cent in January 2024.
Food prices which were ruling high till October 2024, has steadily been declining since then reaching the ceiling set by the Reserve Bank of India.
Besides food prices, changes in the prices of some common consumer goods and services, such as housing, apparel, transportation, electronics, medical care, education, also affect consumer price index.
