BHEL wins Rs990 crore order from Rajasthan thermal power project

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has received a Rs990 crore contract for installing two thermal generating sets of 250 MW each in a Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RRVUNL).
The two units of 250 MW each (units 3 and 4) are part of an expansion project of Chhabra Thermal Power Station (TPS) that will add 12 million units every day to the grid on commissioning.
BHEL is already executing a contract for setting up two units of 250 MW each (Units 1 and 2) at Chhabra TPS in Baran District of Rajasthan. The present order, for Units 3 and 4 at the same power project and are slated for synchronisation during the 11th Plan.
BHEL has already supplied and commissioned thermal sets aggregating to 2,750 MW for RRVUNL. These include units of various ratings at Suratgarh, Kota, Giral, Dholpur and Ramgarh power plants. BHEL said these sets recorded an impressive plant load factor (PLF) of 92.3 per cent and operating availability (OA) of 93.2 per cent during 2007-08.
BHEL's scope of work in the present contract envisages design, engineering, manufacture, supply, erection and commissioning of steam ghenerators and steam turbine generators and associated auxiliaries with state-of-the-art controls and instrumentation system.
The equipment for the project will be supplied by BHEL's Haridwar, Trichy, Ranipet and Bangalore plants, while BHEL's power sector – Northern Region will undertake erection and commissioning of the equipment.
BHEL has fully established state-of-the-art technology for manufacture of thermal sets up to 600 MW rating in the sub-critical range and has the capability to manufacture sets up to 1,000 MW rating. The company has also equipped itself to produce thermal sets with supercritical parameters, suited to Indian conditions, using Indian as well as imported coal.
BHEL is building capacity and capability to contribute fully for meeting the power forecast for the 11th Plan and beyond. For this, the company has enhanced its manufacturing capacity to 10,000 MW per annum which is being further enhanced to 15,000 MW per annum in the next two years at a total investment of Rs4,200 crore. Manpower is also being ramped up in a commensurate and timely manner. Besides, the company has taken steps like shift in operational focus from product to project and implementation of effective project management systems.
