Ashok Leyland improves performance; sales rise by 15.4%

Chennai: The commercial vehicle major Ashok Leyland has closed the first half of the current financial year with a total sale of 15,820 vehicles — up by 15.4 per cent over 13,711 vehicles in the corresponding six months of the previous year. While exports accounted for 1,004 units, the domestic sales stood at 14,816 units.

The domestic sales of its medium duty vehicle (MDV) accounted for 14,706 vehicles (12,755 vehicles in first half of 2001-02). Out of this, sales to the passenger segment were at 4,813, and the goods carrier sector stood at 9,893. The MDV exports totalled 857 units (passenger segment: 493 units; goods carrier: 364 units).

During the period under review, the company sold 257 light commercial vehicles, of which 147 units were exported. The half-yearly volumes were boosted by Ashok Leyland's September 2002 performance when it sold 3,282 vehicles (domestic: 3,081 units; exports: 201 units).
