Workers strike as Air India fails to keep payment promise

As Air India reneged on its promise that all employees would be paid their salary on Friday, a section of AI workers went on a two-hour flash strike from 1 pm to 3 pm.
Reacting strongly, the Air India management warned the striking workers of stringent action, including a pay cut.
Earlier, blaming the management for ''going back on its promise'' to pay salaries by Friday, Aviation Industry Employees Guild leader V J Deka warned that the employees would boycott work from 1300 hours to 1500 hours.
"No move has been made with regard to payment of salary by the finance department and it is impossible that the salaries can be paid tomorrow," he said late on Thursday, adding that the employees were "intentionally being pushed to the edge" to agitate.
The airline has announced that junior executives of Air India and Indian Airlines will not get their salaries today.
Earlier, NACIL, which now runs the Air India-Indian combo, had tried to push back salaries to the middle of the month, but backtracked in the face of union opposition.
