New Delhi: India has received the second of the three contracted Israeli-made Phalcon Airborne Early Warning and Control System. The second aircraft landed at the Jamnagar air base in Gujarat on Thursday, flying in from Israel.
India received the first of the three Phalcons in May last year. It is currently serving with the 50 Squadron at Agra, which is where the second one is now headed.
While the first one was deployed for operations on the western front the second one is likely headed for deployment on the eastern front.
The AEW&CS system provides state-of-the art surveillance capabilities to the Indian Air Force.
Commonly referred to as an 'eye in the sky', the Ilyushin-76 platform, which hosts the Israeli Phalcon radar system, will allow integrated operations and enhanced surveillance capabilities for the Indian armed forces.
The system will be used to detect incoming hostile cruise missiles and aircraft from hundreds of kilometres away and will also direct air defence fighters during combat operations against enemy aircraft.
