Bull Harshad Mehta, 47, who was embroiled in the multi-crore
securities scam that shook the nation a decade ago,
died at Thane on 31 December 2001. He developed chest
pain at 11 pm on 30 December and was shifted to Thane
civil hospital where he was declared dead at 12.40 am.
Mehtas body was taken to JJ Hospital, Mumbai, for postmortem by forensic experts at 5.30 a.m. The police have registered a case of natural death.

Mehta,
who was lodged in Thane Central Jail, was arrested by
the CBI on 9 November along with his brothers Ashwin
and Sudhir in a case of alleged embezzlement of Rs 250
crore from 27 lakh missing shares of 90 blue-chip
companies. On 21 December, a special court had rejected
their bail plea and remanded them to judicial custody
till 4 January.
