Reliance Consumer acquires majority stake in Tamil Nadu-based Udhaiyam Agro Foods

Reliance Consumer Products Limited (RCPL), the consumer products division of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), has acquired a majority stake in Tamil Nadu-based Udhaiyams Agro Foods Private Limited.

Under the transaction, RCPL has acquired a majority stake in the heritage food brand, leaving its promoters with a minority stake in the company. Udhaiyam is now part of Reliance group and is expected to give a big boost to RCPL’s brand portfolio.

This acquisition also helps promote an Indian legacy brand and give global quality acceptance to an Indian products.

Udhaiyam, according to T Krishnakumar, director, RCPL, is a true representative of Tamil Nadu’s food culture and has a record of maintaining product quality for decades. It offers healthy food choices to consumers at affordable prices and with RCPL support, will soon be a national brand.

The partnership with RCPL opens up new opportunities for Udhaiyam, which owns some of the top brands in pulses, rice, spices, snacks and idli batter, among others, added S Sudhakar, managing director of Udhaiyam Agro Foods Private Limited.

Original promoters of Udhaiyam Agro Foods Private Ltd, S Sudhakar and S Dinakar, will continue to hold a minority stake in the company, and support the company in scaling the packaged pulses business even after the transfer of assets.

The acquisition of Udhaiyam will help Reliance Consumer Products to serve the consumer better by improving relations with the consumer and meeting the diverse needs of the Indian consumer.

Reliance Consumer will help the Tamil Nadu-based Udhaiyam brand expand across the country and bring the company’s products like pulses, refined sugar, refined edible oil, spices and idli batter and other items across the country.
