Copenhagen Airports to have new low-cost terminal in operation by mid-2010
08 Oct 2008
Copenhagen Airports (CPH) said it will construct a low-cost terminal with an initial capacity to handle 6 million passengers annually. According to CEO Brian Petersen, the new terminal will be designed to "provide new opportunities for growth for the airlines during these difficult times and more cheap fares to choose from for the passengers."
Construction is expected to begin early 2009 and operations scheduled to commence in the summer of 2010. The terminal would be able to double passenger capacity if the need should so arise.
The LCC terminal will be an extension of existing facilities and have six aircraft stands. Passengers will use the central security checkpoint and the existing baggage sorting system. This arrangement will help keep construction costs down at around DKK200 million ($36.3 million).
Passenger charges for airlines using the new terminal will be half those applied at the main terminal. Also, airlines that wish to utilise the new terminal will have to meet a number of efficiency requirements, including a 30 minute turnaround period.
Passengers will be expected to check in mainly via the Internet, mobile phones or through self-service kiosks.
