Indian low cost carrier, SpiceJet, has announced the launch of domestic cargo operations, which it said will cover eight major cities initially. It said, eventually, it intends to network 18 destinations for freighter operations.

Currently SpiceJet's Boeing 737-800/900ER aircraft carry 2-3.5 tons of cargo on each flight. With the carrier operating 118 daily flights, its fleet provides a total capacity of about 350 tons to the freight market.

The launch of cargo operations is in line with the carrier's strategy to increase ancillary revenues to 7 per cent by the end of the current financial year.
