Reports appearing on flight tracking sites on the Internet (Flight Aware) suggest that an Air India London Heathrow-New York JFK flight, AIC111, a Boeing 777-300, on 27 July, declared PAN-PAN due to low fuel level while approaching New York JFK.

PAN is an acronym for ''Possible Assistance Needed'' and like the more popularly known MAYDAY denotes an urgent condition.

The flight, coming from London Heathrow Airport (EGLL) and bound for JFK, apparently had fuel left only for 9 minutes and landed with less than the minimum fuel.

According to reports, the flight had previously been rerouted northwards to avoid bad weather.
