US probes Huawei's violation of sanctions against Syria, Iran

The US government has launched a probe to determine whether Chinese company Huawei had violated US export rules by shipping US technology to countries like Syria and Iran, The New York Times reported.

The commerce department has reportedly subpoenaed the firm for information regarding the export and re-export of US technology to Syria, Iran, Cuba, North Korea and Sudan over the past five years.

Huawei said in a statement to The New York Times that it was committed to complying with all rules and regulations wherever it operated.

According to commentators though the probe was reportedly ongoing, it did not mean that the commerce department had accused Huawei of wrongdoing.

However, Huawei's competitor ZTE learned earlier this year there could be significant consequences from a commerce department investigation.

ZTE had its exports restricted and ended up overhauling its leadership team after the US government reportedly learned it was selling equipment to Iran.
