Telephone subscriber base in India swells to 688.38 million; tele-density reaches 58.17

Telecom service providers in the country added 16.92 million new wireless telephone subscribers in July, taking the overall number of telephone subscribers in the country to 688.38 million, a 2.49 per cent increase from 671.69 million in the previous month (June 2010).

However, the number of wireline subscribers has declined to 35.96 million in July 2010 from 36.18 million in June 2010.

The overall tele-density in the country reached 58.17 while wireless tele-density stood at 55.14. Overall wireline tele-density stood at 3.04.

State-run Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) held 83.86 per cent of the wireline market as of end-July 2010.

On the other hand, wireless subscriber base recorded an increase of 2.66 per cent, increasing to 652.42 million at the end of July 2010 from 635.51 million in June 2010.

Total broadband subscriber base in the country increased to 9.77 million as of July 2010 from 9.45 million in June 2010, a growth of 3.39 per cent.
