India, South Korea sign civil nuclear pact

India and South Korea today signed a civil nuclear cooperation deal that offers a framework for participation of Korean companies in atomic power plant projects in the India.
The agreement was signed after a meeting between president Pratibha Patil and her South Korean counterpart Lee Myung-Bak.
With this, South Korea has become the ninth country to sign a civil nuclear cooperation agreement with India after the Nuclear Suppliers' Group's (NSG) waiver in 2008.
The other countries that have signed such pacts with India are the US, France, Russia, Canada, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Argentina and Namibia.
South Korea generates 35 per cent of its electricity needs from 20 nuclear plants and is keen to export its technology to fast developing countries like India.
According to Sanjay Singh, secretary (east), ministry of external affairs, the two countries had just concluded and signed a bilateral agreement on cooperation on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
